Pacific Alliance Wrap-Up
March 31, 2008 by northernriver
My parting thoughts:
- Jana was blatantly and unjustly OVER-scored on uneven bars. Now I love Jana, I do. You must know that by now, from the way I hoped and prayed that she would be at Pacific Alliance. But her score on uneven bars was just plain silly and idiotic, and gives the Jana-haters more fodder. Or maybe that was the judges’ intent…to get more gymnastics snobs to hate Jana by over-scoring her. Hah.
- Yezhova Grebenkova was robbed on uneven bars. And I am angry that she didn’t win a medal in the balance beam final.
- As for the juniors…Props to Rebecca Bross for soldiering through the event finals competition even with that scary fall on uneven bars. Unfortunately, the one affected by Bross’ mishap wasn’t Bross herself, but rather seemed to be the wonderful Sam Shapiro, who screwed up event finals when she is capable of so much better. Sadness.
- A big WHOO-HOO! goes to Peng-Peng Lee (CAN) for successfully doing a Bhardwaj. She belly-flopped on the low bar attempting it in team finals (Ouch! I’m shocked that she didn’t spew all her guts out!) but she pulled it out in the end. Good work!
- Congratulations also to Darlene Hill for winning the floor exercise event finals.
- Dasha should have won more medals. KTHNXBAI.
- ZOMG NASTIA FELL! On uneven bars, no less. And still won silver. Shades of Li Shanshan (CHN), anyone?

Ooh, ouch. But the picture would be more terrifying if it weren’t for that wedgie…
And with that, Pacific Alliance is over. Now I have exams.
Poor Nastia looked like she had just totally run out of steam by event finals. Hopefully she can work on the endurance before August. And I have to agree on Jana’s score on UB. That was just ridiculous score given her lack of toe point and blatant leg separation. I too love Jana, but I just don’t think that that kind of form is going to cut it in the Olympics. Looks lilek the Olympic mix continues to get more itneresting after every meet…
Jana also hit like 1 handstand in the whole routine!! Yikes.
Please Chellsie, make a comeback like your fellow Wisconsinites are!
I know this is mostly women’s gymnastics, but Paul has been quite impressive! He is the top US gymnast right now after taking years off. I don’t know if that says a lot about him or very little about everyone else. I hope Morgan can get healthy in time.
