My Valentine’s Day post about Simona Amânar contained a lot of content that I found in a wonderful little cache of Romanian newspaper articles.
That cache is Romanian Gymnastics News. The site has been defunct since 2003, with broken links galore, but the translated articles that are still housed there (if you can get past the encoding glitches in Internet Explorer) are a fascinating insight into the trials and triumphs of Romanian gymnasts. The link above will take you the the few articles they translated from 2003; you can click the links at the bottom of that page to access the articles from 2000 – 2002, as well.
It’s especially interesting if you read any article that talks about one or some of what I call the ‘Romanian Dream Team’ (Milo, Amânar, Gogean, and usually Olaru). With all that, you could write a HBO primetime drama about them, something like ‘Sex and the City’, only it would be in Romanian, and somewhat tamer. (That is, you could’ve written it if you hadn’t been on strike for the last couple of months. )
Or maybe a movie would be better; we could call it the Divine Secrets of the Deva Sisterhood. You know?
